A scientist uses a submarine to study ocean life.

• She begins at sea level, which is an elevation of o feet.
• She descends for 65 seconds at a speed of 4.9 feet per second.
• She then travels directly up for 60 seconds at a speed of 2.1 feet per
second.
At this point, what is her elevation, in feet?

Answer:

d = 102 below the surface of the sea.

Explanation:

65 Seconds -- Direction down

d = ?

r = 4.9 feet / second

t = 65

d = 4.9 * 65 = 318 feet below sea level.

60 seconds -- direction up

t = 60 seconds

r = 2.1 feet/second

d = 2.1 *60 = 126 upwards.

Answer

The answer is neither one of the two distances.

d = 318 - 216

d = 102 below the surface of the sea.

Note: you might be asked to use a minus sign in your answer. I would dispute that. You are not told which sign down and up should take. All you can do is record the distance as I have.
