Julius Caesar began his rise to power in 60 B.C.E. by forging an alliance with general Pompey and a wealthy patrician, Crassus. Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44 B.C. by a group of senators on the Ides during a meeting of the Senate at the Theatre of Pompey in Rome. The senators stabbed Caesar 23 times.
