Remember that, by definition, like terms are terms whose variables (and their exponents) are the same. In other words, they are terms that are "like" each other. Note that the coefficients (the numbers you multiply by, such as "3" in 3x) can be different.

This way, the like terms would be


\begin{gathered} -3a \\ \text{and} \\ 1a \end{gathered}
