I believe the answer to your problem is x=1.25
You will want to get rid of the fraction so you multiply both sides of the equation by 2 and so you'd get
4+2(8x+11)-12=34 then you distribute
4+16x+22-12=34 then combine like terms

16x+14=34 and then move over 14
16x=20and then divide and isolate x
x=1.25

(4 + 2(8x + 11) / 2 - 12 = 17...distribute through the parenthesis
(4 + 16x + 22) / 2 - 12 = 17 ...add 12 to both sides
( 16x + 26) / 2 = 17 + 12
(16x + 26) / 2 = 29 ...multiply both sides by 2
16x + 26 = 29 * 2
16x + 26 = 58 ...subtract 26 from both sides
16x = 58 - 26
16x = 32...divide both sides by 16
x = 32/16
x = 2 <==
