We have to write a word problem with three movements on the number line.
Word problem:
We can think of a piece of paper in the wind.
First the wind moves the paper 4 meters to the right. Then, it moves it again but 7 meters to the left. Finally, it moves itagain 1 meter tho the right.
We have to find the final position of the paper relative to the starting oint.
Solution:
If we use a number ruler, we will place the paper in 0 as the starting point.
If it moves 4 meters to the right (NOTE: each unit will represent one meter in this problem), the paper will be now placed at 4.
If it moves 7 meters to the right, we have to substract 7 units from the current position. This means 4-7 = -3. This will place the paper 3 units to the left of 0.
Finally, if it moves 1 meter to the right, we add 1 to the current position, getting -3+1 = -2.
The final position is -2 or 2 meters to the left of the starting point.
We can draw it in the number line as:
We could have also calculated it directly as 0+4-7+1 = -2.
