What is the relationship among the three quatrains in a Shakespearean or English sonnet?

Each quatrain expresses a different opinion about the sonnet's topic.

They add variety to the poem's form by using three different meters.

They unite the poem by developing a single topic and theme.

They represent the beginning, middle, and ending of a narrative.

I would say that they represent the beginning, middle, and ending of a narrative. Shakespearean sonnets have 3 quatrains, and a rhyming couplet at the end.
