Answer: Probably the dwarf planet - Pluto

Step-by-step explanation:

Pluto was once a planet and was demoted to a dwarf planet. It has size smaller than mercury ( 25 times smaller) but larger than asteroid. Pluto has 5 moons. It lies beyond the orbit of Neptune in the Kuiper belt. It was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. Pluto revolves around sun in 248 years.

The object discovered by the scientist is most likely to be Pluto.
