I agree Leeandrew2 he would need to pull out 2 socks if they matched the right way. and the answer is 5.

It seems to be a trick question. the minimum he would need to pull out would be 2 socks if they matched right away. If it is asking for the minimum to ensure he has a matching pair, the answer would be 5
