12x - 23 + 2x = -5
14x-23=-5 /+23
14x=18
x=18/14=9/7

12x-23+2x=-5

combine the like terms (x) so,

12x+2x-23=-5

so, this will give you:
14x-23=-5

now, remove the numbers

so,
14x=-5+23

this will give you :
14x+18

x = (18)/(14)

x = 1.285714286
