How are factors related to prime numbers

Once you divide a number up into prime factors, all of the number's factors are simply all combinations of these prime factors.

For example: the prime factors of 20 are 22 x 51 . The exponent 1 is normally not written;

To find out if a number is prime, it can only have two factors, 1 and itself.
