How does inertia affect a person who is not wearing seat belt driving a collision

An object in motion stays in motion due to inertia, so when a person gets in a collision and isn’t wearing a seat bell they don’t stop with the car, they keep going ; when the person does wear a seat belt, they are held back by the seat belt.
