Explain the battle between "the richard" and the "serapis"? (The Naval War)

Explanation:

The most prominent single ship engagement of the American Revolution began on 23rd September 1779. It was a duel between the John Paul Jones command, Bonne Homme Richard and the HMS Serapis. The Serapis was a fifty gunship that gunned out the Bonne Homme Richard which was scarcely navigable.

I believe correct me if I am wrong but am very sure my answer is correct.
