During the trial, Atticus has Ewell write his name on a sheet of paper. This is to prove that Ewell's dominant hand is his left hand, therefore it was he who punched the right side of Mayella's face, and not Tom Robinson (whose left hand has been deemed useless after a cotton gin accident).
