why does the united states have a representative democracy (republic) instead of a direct democracy as it's form of government?

Citizens of the United States vote for people to represent their ideas and make decisions for them in the government, whereas in a direct democracy citizens would vote on issues directly.

I believe the reason was so that the smaller states would have a more fair representation in government.
