How did geography help to limit the expansion of the Byzantine Empire?

they had mountains and valleys near them so they weren't able to expand without getting attacked

I don't know if you were given specific answers to this or not but I will explain as well as I can. Since the Byzantine Empire was located on a peninsula, only one access point by land had to be defended. However, this also worked against them because all the enemy would have to do is to create a chain of ships in the surrounding water to form a blockade to stop importation of goods into the empire.
