40 meters in 60 seconds could be expressed as

(40 meters)/(16 seconds)

So, in order to get the unit rate, we divide the numerator and denominator by 16.

(40)/(16) \\ (40/16)/(16/16) \\ (2.5)/(1) \\ (2.5 meters)/(1 second)

So, the unit rate is 2.5 meters per second (or every one second)
