many people to grow food and work in factories
factories made supplies
railroads
strong navy
weaknesses
had to conquer a large area
invading unfamiliar land

Confederacy
strengths
Defending their homeland
Did not want to lose land, country, and freedom
good soldiers----excellent shooters
former officers in the US army
weaknesses
few factories
few railroads
few supplies
small pop. 9 mil
more than 1/3 were enslaved
poor navy
