the slope between 2 points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) is
(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)
given
(1,-1) and (5,-7)
x1=1
y1=-1
x2=5
y2=-7
slope=(-7-(-1))/(5-1)=(-7+1)/4=-6/4=-3/2
