3x + 4 = 5(x-8)

distribute the 5 to x and -8 and you'd get

3x + 4 = 5x-40 then subtract 4 from both sides getting

3x = 5x-44 then subtract 5x from both sides getting

8x = -44 then divide both sides by 8 getting

x = -5.5

3x + 4 = 5(x - 8)
3x + 4 = 5x - 40
- 3x
4 = 2x - 40
+ 40
44 = 2x
÷ 2
22 = x
Hope this helps!
