Turn 1 1/4 into improper fraction: 4x1=4+1=5/4
Then you use improper fractions to solve before turning it into a mixed fraction as your answer: 23/9 - 5/4. Find a common denominator for 9 & 4 which is 36.
So 36/9=4x23=92/36 & 36/4=9x5=45/36. So, 92/36 - 45/36 = 47/36. To turn 47/36 into a mixed fraction is 47/36= 1. Then 47-36=11. So the answer is
1 & 11/36. Hope this helps.
