(y)/(y^(2)-1),\ (y)/(y^(2)-8y+7)

=(y)/((y-1)(y+1)),\ (y)/((y-1)(y-7))

=(y(y-7))/((y-1)(y+1)(y-7)),\ (y(y+1))/((y-1)(y+1)(y-7))

So the common denominator is
(y-1)(y+1)(y-7)
