So,

(1-x) represents the percent of original price being paid as we know that if percentage is given in decimal form then to get the percent of original price being paid we subtract it from 1.

For example:

In the above example, we subtract it from 100% to get the remaining price he is receiving at.

If we have 0.2 as discount then the selling price will be 0.8 of marked price i.e. we get 0.8 which tells us the original price is being paid.
