Explain why a block of gold is more dense then a block of iron of equal size

Some metals are denser than others - their atoms pack tightly in a given amount of space. Since density is mass over volume, it means that the metal which has more weight per volume is denser. Gold has more weight per volume than iron, which means that it is denser, regardless of whether they have the same size or not.
