Usually bacteria cannot survive temperatures higher than 45 degrees Celsius, which is why surgical instruments are sterilized at the temperature of 100 degrees Celsius, just in case some of the bacteria manage to survive. Alcohol also clears your skin of microorganisms by dissolving their cell membranes leaving them exposed to the surroundings and their imminent death.
