When an ordinary mercury thermometer is placed in hot water, its reading drops at first, but then quickly rises. explain why?

It becomes colder as the thermometer stays inside the beaker for longer. Also, the thermometer would be at the bottom of the beaker and there all of the cold water is collected as it is very dense and so it sinks whereas the hot water is less dense and rises.
