"Let generosity, not greed, be your underlying force." However this specific excerpt cannot be applied here since Ulrich's family owns a piece of land and has kept a never ending feud with George's family about staying off of this land. But George inherits this two-family conflict and neither man does anything to end the feud. If there were to be a written answer I'd say: Hate and Arrogance but I believe Greed does justice to the theme.

Answer: d. greed

Explanation: "The Interlopers" by Saki is a short story about two rival families fighting over land. This dispute eventually leads Georg and Ulrich pinned under a tree, and after they have their threats, they fall into silence and then reconciliation. Their greed had made each other enemies, but without it, they have become good friends.
