Let denote the numbers with X and Y. From the statement that one number is 5 more than twice another we can write the following: X=2*Y+5

From the fact that their sum is 23 we can write: X+Y=23, so it follows: X=23-Y

The following system of equation represents the problem:

X=23-Y and X=2*Y+5

The solution of the problem is:

23-Y=2*Y+5

23=3*Y+5

23-5=3*y

18=3*Y

Y=18/3=6

X=23-Y=23-6=17

y = 2x + 5

x + y = 23
