A kitchen floor has 15 1/2 tiles in an area of 2 4/5 square feet. How many tiles are in one square foot?

Simplify it so they are both improper fractions:
14/5 : 31/2
We need the left side to be 1: to do this we divide both sides by 14/5.
(14/5)/(14/5) is obviously 1 so let's go onto the next one:
31/2) / (14/5
To divide fractions we flip the second one and multiply:
31/2*5/14
(31*5)/(2*14)
155/28
Now we simplify it:
155/28= 5 15/28
Therefore there are 5 15/28 tiles in 1 square foot.
