Answer:

The value of a is -4.

Explanation:

Since, two lines
a_1 x+b_1 y=c_1 and
a_2 x+b_2 y=c_2 are called parallel lines,

If
(a_1)/(a_2)=(b_1)/(b_2)\\eq (c_1)/(c_2)

If 3x + 6y = 4 and ax-8y = 12 are parallel lines,

Then, by the above property,

(3)/(a)=(6)/(-8)\\eq (4)/(12)

\implies (3)/(a)=(6)/(-8)

By cross multiplication,

-24 = 6a

\implies -4=a ( Dividing both terms by 6}

Hence, the value of a is -4 for which 4 = 3x + 6y and ax – 8y = 12 are parallel.
