The DNA would be used as the cells' “design plans” for proteins.

Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA is a molecule that contains the instructions an organism needs to develop, live and reproduce.

A cell uses DNA as plans for building proteins. Another nucleic acid, RNA, makes the proteins.
