To determine whether the triangle is acute, right, or obtuse, add the squares of the two smaller sides, and compare the sum to the square of the largest side. If the sum is greater than the square of the largest side, the triangle is acute, if the sum is equal to the square of the largest side, the triangle is a right triangle, and if the sum is less than the square of the largest side the triangle is obtuse.

The sum of the squares of the smaller sides is equal to


17^2+17^2=2(17^2)=578

The square of the largest side is


22^2=484

Since the sum is bigger than the square of the largest side


578>484

The triangle is an acute triangle.
