The correct answer is D) 75%.

One of the biggest myths of the South before the Civil War is that a majority of the population had slaves. However, obtaining slaves was expensive and could not be afforded by the average small farmers. Instead, only a small percentage of Southerners owned slaves. On top of that, only the richest 10% of the Southern population had the finances to own more than 5 slaves.
