Using knowledge from a studies comparing dogs to human babies, some dogs are as smart or smarter than the average 3 or 4 year old. Which has the comprehension of usually a few thousand words. So if I had to guess I would choose well over a thousand words.

Answer: Well over a thousand words

Although all children develop differently, on average, a four-year-old child will have a vocabulary of over 1,000 words. There are some other cognitive functions that the child is likely to be able to do. He should be able to put together sentences of 4 or 5 words, as well as building sentences in the past tense.
