Why does Odysseus refrain from killing the giant? What does this mean for the resolution of the conflict?

Odysseus refrains from killing the giant/cyclops because he needs him to open the cave door for him and his crew. This means that Odysseus has to wait to go on with his plan to kill the giant. This leads to the resolution of the conflict coming later then we expect.
