How has the concept of the militia changed since the early days of the republic

as defined by the US Congress, has changed over time, complicating its meaning.

During colonial America, all able-bodied men of certain ages were eligible for the militia. Individual towns formed local independent militias for their own defense. i dont know if that helps XD
