The president of the United States has one of the biggest and hardest jobs in the world. As the leader of one of the world's most powerful countries, the president

-runs the military as commander in chief of the armed forces

-negotiates treaties, or agreements, with other countries.

-appoints Supreme Court justices and other judges

-proposes new laws and signs them into legislation when Congress passes them

-can veto bills that Congress passes

-appoints ambassadors to other countries and sets foreign policy

-helps decide how much money the government will spend each year

-appoints the heads of, and helps run, the government's many departments
