Nikita Khrushchev was the leader of the Soviet Union. In 1960 during the Cold War, a U-2 American spy plane was shot down while flying above Soviet territories by the Soviet Air Force. At first the United States said it was a weather research aircraft, but once the Soviet Union inspected the wreckage of the plane, found out it was taken photos of the Soviet military bases.
