Which phrases are examples of sensory imagery that make the details of the setting more vivid? Check all that apply.

crops withered, curled up, then died under the thirsty sun
morning in July a hurricane came out of the east
snapping their roots and tearing them out of the earth
a voice that seemed to rumble out of the earth itself
prodding each other and giggling, went back to the house

When we say “Sensory imagery” we refer to any description that takes in one or more of the five senses: touch, sight, taste, smell and sound. If there is a good amount of sensory detail in the text it helps the reader perfectly visualize the scene that is being describing. What is more, when it specifies “vivid” it means that the phrases must be detailed and clear. Whit this explained, we can conclude that the best lines that fit with this description are:

  • “crops withered, curled up, then died under the thirsty sun”
  • “a voice that seemed to rumble out of the earth itself”
  • “prodding each other and giggling, went back to the house”
