Set up an equation. 3(x-5)=36 Distribute the parentheses. 3x-15=36 Do inverse operations to isolate the variable. (-15+15=0) and (36-15=21) 3x=21 Do the inverse operations again. (3÷3=1) and (21÷3=7) SOLUTION: x=7
