Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Autosomal dominance is a pattern of inheritance characteristics of some genetic diseases. People with this condition are with inherent one mutated copy of NF1 gene in each cell which is the one responsible in providing instructions for making a protein called neurofibromin. In about half of cases, the altered gene is passed down from an affected parent.
