Each state has an elector who is voted into office by the people. That elector then votes for the candidate and the votes add up. It's a winner take all system. The only two exceptions are Maine and Nebraska. As the votes tally up, even if not all states have voted yet, the candidate who reaches the magic number of 270 wins. Then throughout the next few months (relating to this year's election, Donald Trump will officially be in office Jan 20) the elected president will go through training in order to be ready to lead the country.

Hope this helped!
