One-third of a number, decreased by six equals eight. What is the number?

the answer is 42. let X= a number.
1/3X-6=8
3(1/3x)-3(6)=3(8)
X-18=24
(you have to cancel the -18 by adding 18, and what you do to one side you have to do to the other, so now its 24+18)
X=42
