Scientific notation is a widely used floating-point system in which numbers are expressed as products consisting of a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by an appropriate power of 10.
Scientific notation is a shorthand way of expressing really large numbers or very small numbers. Underatanding exponents makes understanding scientific notation easy. There are two parts to keep in mind when writing a number in scientific notation. 1st number has to be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10 2nd number is 10 to a power. The power will show how many places to move the decimal point.

Scientific notation is basically a shortcut for writing numbers. Scientists use it all the time if they are writing numbers that are very large or very small. If you encounter numbers that have many zeros at the end, you can use scientific notation to save your time. When using scientific notation, you're allowed to simplify all the zeros that you have in the number by writing the number as a product of a number and a power of 10.
