A theater group made appearances in two cities. The hotel charge before tax in the second city was

$1000
higher than in the first. The tax in the first city was
5%
, and the tax in the second city was
9.5%
. The total hotel tax paid for the two cities was
$965
. How much was the hotel charge in each city before tax?

Set up a problem: .05h+.095(h+1000)=965. .05h+.095h+95=965. Combine like terms: .145h=870. Get the unknown by itself: H=6000. The first hotel was $6,000 the second was 6000+1000=$7,000 :)
