Answer:

The Japanese saw Westerns as foreign people that did not meet their standards. They found them dirty and socially uncouth. And, since they had the supplies to make things that they liked, like muskets, they no longer had any use for the foreigners. There is a policy that is referred to as "isolationism". This was the policy that was implemented as the leaders feared that they would rely too much on trades and foreigners, or that outsiders might want to change their beliefs and practices. China tried to be self-sufficient, bit it didn’t work fro too long. Japan, though, had limited influence from the outside world, and was able to thrive in that time.

The Japanese saw Westerns as foreign devils. They were very hairy, filthy by Japanese standards, and socially uncouth in the strangest ways. However, the Japanese like muskets. After they'd bought enough to make them on their own, they no longer had any use for the foreign devils. The upper class also despised Christianiy and crucified evey Christian they could find.

The Chinese saw the foreign devils in the same way the Japanese, but they liked doing business with them, so the foreign devils were confined to a single island.
