A car rental agency advertised renting a luxury, full-size car for $19.95 per day and $0.29 per mile. If you rent this car for 3 days, how many whole miles can you drive if you only have $200 to spend.

The first thing we have to do is identify the values of the problem and express them in terms of an equation:

• 1 day of luxury car rental is worth $ 19.95

,

• 1 mile traveled in the car costs $ 0.29

RentCar=19.95\cdot d+0.29\cdot m

Where d is the rent days and m is the miles that the car can drive.

If we have $200 and want to rent the car for 3 days, we have to solve the ecuation for m:

\begin{gathered} m=(RentCar-19.95\cdot d)/(0.29) \\ RentCar=200 \\ d=3 \\ m=(200-19.95\cdot(3))/(0.29) \\ m=(140.15)/(0.29) \\ m=483.27\text{ miles} \end{gathered}

The car can only travel 483.27 miles with the $ 200
