This is an okay hook. Here's another version you may want to use:
The penny has been a part of our history since 1793 when it was first introduced. It is a symbol of our country's history, of where we come from.

This hook is okay but it doesn't really grab the reader's attention the way it should. Maybe add some information about the first penny ever created. Describe it a bit. Since you are doing the history of pennies that will give the reader more background on the subject matter and intrigue them with something they possibly did not know.
