In two or more complete sentences explain how you would set up and solve the equation.

Tom’s Car Rentals rented 78 SUVs and 67 compact cars this month. The number of SUVs rented by Tom’s has been increasing by 6 SUVs each month. The number of compact cars rented by Tom’s has been decreasing by 4 cars each month. If these trends continue, in how many months will the number of SUVs rented be twice the number of compact cars rented?

Here is a pattern, 78:67, 84:63, 90:59, 96:55, 102:51. So it took 4 times to get there.

Answer:

After 4 months number of SUVs rented will be twice the number of compact cars rented.

Explanation:

Tom's car rentals rented 78 SUVs and 67 compact cars.

The number of SUV's rented by Tom's Car Rentals has been increasing by 6 every month and number of compact cars are decreasing by 4.

Let after x months the number of SUVs rented will be twice of the compact cars rented.

Number of SUVs rented after x months = 78 + 6x

Number of compact cars rented after x months = 67 - 4x

78 + 6x = 2(67 - 4x)

78 + 6x = 134 - 8x

6x + 8x = 134 - 78

14x = 56

x = 4

Therefore, after 4 months number of SUVs rented will be twice the number of compact cars rented.
