Define a variable, set up an equation, then solve. Rachel took a two-day road trip last weekend. She drove 65 miles less on Sunday than she did on Saturday. If twice the miles driven on Sunday is 373 more than the number of miles driven on Saturday how many miles did she drive each day?

Assume that she drove x miles on Saturday

She drove 65 miles less on Sunday than he did on Saturday

She drove x - 65 on Sunday

Twice the miles are driven on Sunday means

2(x - 65)

Is more than the number of miles on Saturday mean

2(x - 65) = 373 + x

Now we will solve the equation

2(x) - 2(65) = 373 + x

2x - 130 = 373 + x

Subtract x from both sides

2x - x - 130 = 373 + x - x

x - 130 = 373

Add 130 to both sides to find x

x - 130 + 130 = 373 + 130

x = 503

She drove 503 miles on Saturday

She drove 503 - 65 = 438 miles on Sunday
