A difference is that common nouns don't start with capital letters; proper nouns do.
Proper nouns are usually names of people, places, books etc, and things that are specific.

The difference between a noun and a proper noun is that nouns are general names and have a capital at the beginning of a sentence or if they are apart of a title. Proper nouns are specific names and always require capitalization.
